Understand the basics of 15 Puzzle

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of 15 Puzzle. Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Identify the playing area and the controls you need. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

A small practice goal

Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow. Notice the feedback after each input.

Understand the aim

Arrange 1 to 15 in reading order with the empty square at the bottom right. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Follow these playing steps

  1. Select a tile directly beside the empty square.
  2. The tile slides into the gap; diagonal moves are not allowed.
  3. Use Undo to step back one move.
  4. Finish the ordered board, or choose New puzzle.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Return to the rules if the result is unexpected.

Work through an example

When the gap is in the last square, only the tile above it and the tile to its left can move into it. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Look for the relevant detail.

Keep this in mind

A distant tile cannot jump across other tiles. Compare the situation with the worked example. Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal.
