Tangram: how a round works

Open Tangram, check the instructions and begin a round. Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

One thing to notice as you play

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Keep the objective visible.

What the game asks you to do

Fill the square target with seven pieces, without gaps or overlap. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

How a round unfolds

  1. Drag a selected piece.
  2. Rotate in 45-degree steps or flip it.
  3. Use snapping for precise alignment.
  4. Check the layout or use one-piece assistance.

Using the playing area

Mouse/touch dragging and rotate/flip buttons. Use the control method described here for this activity. A new-round button replaces the current round.

See how the rules apply

The parallelogram may need flipping rather than rotation. Your next round may have a different position, so inspect it before acting. Consider the next action carefully.

A useful caution

Overlaps do not count as filling the target. Check the rule before repeating the action. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
