Making your first moves in Futoshiki

Open Futoshiki, check the instructions and begin a round. Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. Look at what changes after your first action. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Twelve 4×4 puzzles with fixed starter values.

Bring this focus to a round

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Make the next step deliberately.

What you need to achieve

Place 1–4 once in each row and column while obeying every inequality. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

The order of play

  1. Select an editable square.
  2. Read inequalities by their row/column coordinates below the board.
  3. Enter 1–4.
  4. Check puzzle verifies both Latin-square rules and inequalities.

How to use the controls

Click or tap squares or graph edges. Number boards include a digit pad. Undo reverses the previous change; Check puzzle validates the solution. Use the control method described here for this activity. Look at the feedback after the action.

Work through an example

r1c2 < r1c3 means row 1 column 2 is smaller than row 1 column 3. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Take a moment to compare.

Avoid this misunderstanding

An inequality specifies order, not an exact difference. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
